Pricing Guide

How Much Does a Greenhouse Cost — and Why?

Whether you’re exploring your first greenhouse or designing a lasting showpiece, understanding what shapes the price helps you invest with confidence. Here’s what you need to know.

"Square footage is a factor but it's not the factor. Pricing is driven by purpose."

Our greenhouse prices vary widely from entry-level economy greenhouses to architectural estate glasshouses and everything in between. Pricing is shaped by the specific choices you make for your space, climate, and growing goals. For 75 years, our mission has been to put the customer at the center of everything we do and not take a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

At BC Greenhouse Builders, nearly every greenhouse is handmade and built to order. That means the same 12×16 footprint can look and perform very differently depending on glazing, framing, automation, and finishing details. This guide helps you understand what’s driving costs so you can find the right fit without overspending or underpreparing.

What Does a Greenhouse Cost?

Five broad price categories guide most purchase decisions. Where do your goals fit?

Why Quality Counts

What Drives the Price Up?

Premium-built greenhouses cost more due to high quality raw materials, North American manufacturing and offering a product that carries a lifetime warranty. There are other factors that result in a higher priced product:

Customization

Unique dimensions, custom sidewall heights, non-standard roof slopes, architectural details, and decorative elements all require additional design and fabrication time. The more personalized the greenhouse, the more it costs and the more it will feel like it was made for you.

Glazing & Framing Upgrades

Premium 6mm single pane, insulated 16mm double pane, or high-performance Low-E glass all cost more than standard 3mm overlap glass and deliver meaningfully better performance. Heavier aluminum framing, custom colors, structural purlins, and trusses are genuine indicators of quality that translate directly to longevity and unmatched strength.

Automated Climate Systems

Ventilation, heating, and cooling systems, along with higher wind and snow load engineering, increase complexity and cost, but also dramatically improve growing success. For anyone planning for year-round growth, this investment almost always pays for itself.

Shipping & Logistics

Larger and heavier greenhouses simply cost more to ship and may require freight equipment. We don’t hide these costs in “free shipping” claims. Every project is quoted individually, per project, so you know exactly what you’re paying for and why.

Permits & Engineering

Larger projects often require stamped drawings for your local permit authority. Not all manufacturers offer this and discovering that gap after purchase is costly. We provide PE/P.Eng stamped drawings for all U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and we recommend confirming this requirement early in your planning.

How to Save

How to Get the Most Greenhouse for Your Budget

Saving money on a greenhouse doesn’t have to mean compromising on quality. The same craftsmanship and lifetime warranty apply across our full range and what changes is how much customization and scale you’re working with.

Two paths in particular stand out for budget-conscious buyers who still want a structure that lasts.

For First-Time Buyers

Traditional 8x8 Single Glass and Polycarbonate Greenhouse

Economy Greenhouses

Our Economy models — The Sunhaven, Legacy, Westgrove, and Parkside — offer ready-to-ship pricing for buyers who want real quality at an accessible entry point. Polycarbonate glazing keeps shipping weight and cost down, and smaller footprints mean simpler foundations, often just pressure-treated wood rather than concrete.

For Custom Backyard Buyers

Backyard Greenhouse

Value Models — 8×12 and 12×16

Our two most popular sizes are pre-fabricated in advance, which reduces production time and materials waste. The result: the same strength, craftsmanship, and lifetime warranty as a fully custom greenhouse at up to 20% savings right from the start. You still choose your frame color, glazing, and add decorative upgrades. No promo code needed.

Your Investment Matters

Why Some Greenhouses Cost More and Are Still Worth It

A greenhouse isn’t a seasonal purchase. It’s a structure that should outlast the decade you bought it in and serve the ones that follow. Here’s what justifies the investment in quality.

Longevity Over Decades

Stronger framing, premium materials, and thoughtful engineering deliver value over 40+ years of use. We regularly hear from customers with greenhouses approaching 40 years old that still look and function like new.

Precision Engineering

Every door, vent, and panel on a BC Greenhouse fits exactly eliminating heat loss, water leakage, and the small frustrations that compound over time. This precision is the product of 75 years of refinement and certified journeyman craftsmanship.

Aesthetic Integrity

Our greenhouses are designed to complement and blend into existing homes, gardens, and public spaces not sit apart from them. A greenhouse that enhances your property adds genuine value and daily enjoyment, not just growing capacity.

Support That Stays

Our team stands by you long after delivery for climate control guidance, greenhouse gardening support, structural questions, and everything in between. When evaluating manufacturers, always confirm they support both the structure and the growing systems inside it. Ask us about our new online Greenhouse Gardening School just for BC Greenhouse customers only!

"We're often asked: what's your price per square foot? Here’s the inside scoop on why that often doesn’t tell the whole story”

Pricing Transparency

Why We Don't Price Per Square Foot

Unlike pre-made kits pulled from a warehouse shelf, every BC Greenhouse is handmade and built to order based on your climate, space, design preferences, and long-term growing goals. Two greenhouses with identical footprints can differ enormously in cost and performance.

What changes the scope and price of your greenhouse:

  • Glass vs. polycarbonate glazing have different materials, different costs, and different growing outcomes
  • Snow and wind load engineering requirements that vary by region and local building code
  • Custom layouts, ventilation systems, and accessories that reflect how you intend to grow

Our instant pricing tool takes less than two minutes and requires no contact information. It’s the fastest way to get a base number for your specific greenhouse.

A Word on Comparison Shopping

How We Think About the Competition

There are many excellent greenhouse companies. Some focus on mass affordability. Others lean on brand heritage or imported kit pricing. We take a different path: personalized support, enduring quality, and design flexibility for serious greenhouse owners.

When shopping, ask whether the company will walk you through your options or just process an order. Ask about wind and snow load ratings, what their warranty covers, and whether permits and engineering are supported. These questions reveal far more than price ever will.

Our team is standing by to help you choose the right greenhouse for your goals, your climate, and your budget. We love to talk to people about their plans for a greenhouse so reach out when you are ready!
