Brooklyn, New York
BC Greenhouse Builders designed and manufactured a custom freestanding lean-to rooftop greenhouse for the Brooklyn School of Inquiry (BSI), in collaboration with Kiss + Cathcart, Architects and NY Sun Works. Installed atop the school’s urban campus, the greenhouse serves as a dynamic extension of BSI’s STEM Lab, supporting hands-on, inquiry-based learning in science, sustainability, and food systems.
Purpose-built for education, the space allows students to engage directly with plant science, environmental monitoring, and controlled growing systems bringing classroom concepts to life through real-world application.
Educational Impact
The BSI greenhouse is more than a growing space; it’s a living laboratory. Students use the facility to explore topics such as plant biology, climate science, and sustainable agriculture. The integrated control systems and environmental monitoring tools provide opportunities for data collection, analysis, and experimentation, reinforcing core STEM principles.
By embedding this infrastructure into the school’s curriculum, BSI empowers students to develop critical thinking skills while fostering environmental stewardship and a deeper understanding of food systems.
