Brooklyn, New York
BC Greenhouse Builders supplied a custom educational greenhouse for PS 216 in Brooklyn, New York. The project is part of a broader initiative focused on integrating urban agriculture into everyday learning. Developed in collaboration with The Edible Schoolyard and WORKac and designers focused on sustainable food education, the greenhouse supports a campus that includes outdoor gardens and teaching spaces.
The space was created to support experiential learning by giving students direct access to a controlled growing environment. It allows them to explore plant science, nutrition, and ecological systems through hands-on activities connected to the curriculum.
“What we are calling for is a revolution in public education – the Delicious Revolution. When the hearts and minds of our children are captured by a school lunch curriculum, enriched with experience in the garden, sustainability will become the lens through which they see the world.” – Alice Waters
Educational Impact
The greenhouse is an important teaching tool within the Edible Schoolyard program. Students take part in the full growing process, including planting, maintenance, and harvesting. This builds a clear understanding of food production and how it connects to daily life.
