BC Greenhouse Builders supplied a custom 28’ x75’ rooftop greenhouse for IWU and their Division of Natural Sciences. The project is part of a broader initiative focused on integrating urban agriculture into everyday learning.
The space was created to support experiential learning by giving students direct access to a controlled growing environment. It allows them to explore plant science, nutrition, and ecological systems through hands-on activities connected to the curriculum
Environmental Controls:
- Automated climate control system for temperature and ventilation
- Integrated heating and ventilation systems for year-round growing
- Environmental sensors for monitoring temperature and humidity
- Automated irrigation and nutrient delivery system
Educational Impact
The greenhouse is an important teaching tool within the Edible Schoolyard program. Students take part in the full growing process, including planting, maintenance, and harvesting. This builds a clear understanding of food production and how it connects to daily life.
Students also develop skills in observation, data collection, and problem-solving. The program introduces key concepts such as sustainability, local food systems, and responsible resource use. The greenhouse supports a stronger connection between students, their food, and their environment while encouraging long-term healthy habits.
